Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the United States is an actress and rapper. Queen Latifah's career in television and music has been recognized with the Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who worked the class at Irvington High School. Her parents divorced at the age of Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was born and raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah means gentle and very kind. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was 8. Always a tall girl the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward on her high school basketball team. She performed the number"Home" from the show The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah started to beatbox with the Ladies Fresh. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the song. The singer signed Latifah and then released her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
